Friday Lesson

Managing risk around high impact news

Red folder releases like NFP can move price in seconds. Here is a simple plan to protect your account before, during and after high impact news.

By CableAnalyst ·

Red folder releases such as Non Farm Payrolls (NFP), CPI and central bank rate decisions can move price more in a few seconds than it moves in a full quiet session. Spreads widen, stop losses slip and the first move often reverses. None of that means you must avoid news forever. It means you need a plan before the number drops, not after.

This Friday lesson walks through that plan step by step.

Why news is different

On a normal day, liquidity is deep and price moves in small steps. Around a big release, liquidity providers pull their orders because nobody wants to be on the wrong side of a surprise. That creates three problems for retail traders:

  • Wider spreads. A pair that usually costs one pip to enter can cost five or more for a few seconds.
  • Slippage. Your stop loss is an instruction, not a guarantee. If price jumps past it, you get filled at the next available price.
  • Fake first moves. The first spike often runs the obvious stops, then turns around once the market digests the full report.

If you trade a funded account, these problems matter even more, because one slipped stop can break a daily loss limit.

Step 1: Know the time

Check the economic calendar every morning before you place a trade. Filter for high impact events on the currencies you trade. For GBPUSD, that means both GBP and USD events.

Write the times down in your local time. In Lagos (WAT), most major US releases land at 13:30 or 14:30 depending on the season, and UK data usually lands at 07:00 or 08:00. Set an alarm ten minutes before each one.

If you do not know when the news is, you are not managing risk. You are guessing.

Step 2: Size down or stay flat

You have three honest choices going into a red folder event:

  1. Stay flat. Close or avoid new trades from about fifteen minutes before the release. This is the right choice for most traders, most of the time.
  2. Size down. If you have a strong reason to hold, cut your position so that a slipped stop still costs less than your normal risk per trade.
  3. Trade the event on purpose. Only if you have a tested news strategy, with rules written down and backtested on past releases.

What you should never do is open a full size trade one minute before the number because the chart "looks ready".

Step 3: Wait for the dust

After the release, let at least the first five minute candle close. Often it is better to wait for the first fifteen minutes. During that time:

  • Watch where price goes relative to your marked levels.
  • Notice whether the spike holds or gets fully retraced.
  • Let spreads return to normal before you click anything.

Once things settle, trade your normal plan. The news has simply given you new information about direction and volatility. Your entry, stop and target rules stay the same.

Step 4: Protect open trades

Sometimes you are already in a trade when news approaches. Before the release, decide what you will do:

  • Move your stop to break even if the trade is in enough profit, so the worst case is a small loss from slippage.
  • Take partial profits and let a smaller position run through the event.
  • Close fully if the trade has not moved and you would not open it right now.

Make this decision calmly before the release. Making it in the middle of a spike usually ends badly.

A simple news day checklist

  • Calendar checked and event times written in WAT.
  • Alarms set ten minutes before each release.
  • No new trades in the fifteen minutes before red folder news.
  • Open trades protected: break even, partials or closed.
  • Wait for at least one full candle after the release.
  • Return to your normal plan once spreads settle.

Final thought

Consistent traders are not the ones who catch every news spike. They are the ones still in the game next month. Treat high impact news as a risk event first and an opportunity second, and your account will thank you.
